A king-size bed and an Aga breakfast awaits you at Start House. Our Family Room with en suite facilities  comfortably sleeps four people and provides plenty of space for a family or friends to get ready for a day in the Slapton area - whether it be walking, nature watching, painting, sunbathing or even Kite-surfing - Start House is an excellent base.

Our guests enjoy sole use of our breakfast/dining room where our speciality Aga breakfast is served with smashing free range eggs produced by our own chickens and ducks, locally sourced meat, and freshly baked bread.  Flasks can be filled for days out, and supper/packed lunches provided on request.

Your room is located within a family home that goes about it's daily business at the same time respecting your privacy and relaxation.  The family will be on hand as much as possible to help with local information if desired - or as invisible as possible if our visitors are desperate for peace!    

The Hamlet of Start is a 2 minute drive from the centre of Slapton village and is a pretty and deeply historical collection of family homes, holiday accommodation and a working family farm.  It is located on a popular circular walk encompassing the Slapton marsh, Ley and Deer Bridge Mill.  The Hamlet has no through road which means the beautiful birdsong is rarely interrupted by the sounds of modern life.

No Minimum Stay   

The Family Room is a large bedroom containing a king-size bed and bunk-beds, an ante room with dressing space and full length mirror, vanity area with hairdryer, ironing facilities, and of course -  tea making facilities.  The bathroom has a full sized bath with shower, and a wonderful view to shave in front of with use of shaving facilities! The room has quality linen and towels for your use.  Also available for the younger members of your family is a safe cot with new mattress and cover.  Use of a small fridge can be arranged.

The bedroom is Georgian in character with a beautiful high fireplace and mantelpiece, window seat and other original features.  The decor echoes our close proximity to the sea and is tastefully furnished and decorated in hues of blues and white.  A tempting view of the sea sandwiched between rolling green hills is enjoyed from the bathroom and sitting up in bed! (if you're on the right side!).  The room also has a flat screen remote controlled television.

Start House itself is a family home of fascinating history - once occupied by American Generals during the evacuation of the Slapton area for the practice of landings during the Second World War.  The family at Start House are lucky to have inherited a beautiful, and interesting garden from it's previous owners that we are steadily stamping our own identity on.  The Garden is an enthralling combination of Georgian terraces that include a walled fruit and vegetable terrace, and a terraced wood with winding pathways and secret stairways to private dreamy places.  The woodland is adorned with snowdrops, primroses and bluebells when the time is right!  At the foot of the woodland there are grassy banks to a leat and shallow stream - perfect for paddling and pond dipping.  The Garden is graced with many wonderful birds and has an elevated position in the valley ideal for bird watching.  Visitors to Start House are welcome to explore the garden at their leisure.
