even kitesurfer, Start House Garden Apartment is the perfect base.
Start Garden Apartment is private
accomodation with it's own front door and parking place. Located just
behind the grand columns of the garden entrance to Start House, this
self contained apartment is comfortable, clean, tasteful and
beautifully decorated echoing the stunning and unique south
facing views of The Sea, Slapton Ley, rolling hills, picture
postcard sheep and cows! The Apartment benefits from it's own private
conservatory over looking the valley, and birdwatching whilst sitting
up in bed is a luxury provided thanks to the magnificent view from the
bedroom window.
All visitors will be provided with
quality linen and towels and a welcome hamper that includes fresh
eggs when available (from our own resident chickens!), home made
marmalade, fresh milk, and a loaf of bread - all included in the
price! The family will be on hand as much as possible to help
with local information if desired - or as invisible as possible if
our visitors are desperate for privacy and peace!

The Hamlet of Start is a 2 minute
drive from the centre of Slapton village and is a pretty and
deeply historical collection of family homes, holiday accomodation
and a working family farm. It is located on a popular
circular walk encompassing the Slapton marsh, Ley and Deer Bridge Mill. The
Hamlet has no through road which means the beautiful birdsong
is rarely interrupted by the sounds of modern life! More unusually
in the local area, Start also benefits from a cycle track
(albeit a little muddy!).
Start House itself is a family home of
fascinating history - once occupied by American Generals during the
evacuation of the Slapton area for the practice of landings during
the Second World War. Most importantly however, Start House
boasts possibly one of the most stunning gardens in the locality.
Lovingly tended and created over 37 years by a wonderful local
couple who have now handed the torch to our family. The Garden is an
enthralling combination of Georgian terraces that include a walled
fruit and vegetable terrace, and a terraced wood with winding
pathways and secret stairways to private dreamy places. The woodland
is adorned with snowdrops, primroses and bluebells when the time is
right! At the foot of the woodland terraces there is an area of
grassy banks next to a leat and shallow stream - perfect for
paddling and pond dipping or simply whiling away the hours dragonfly
watching! The Garden is graced with the company of many
wonderful birds, including a favourite regular Buzzard named George
and our stream has been paddled in by the occasional water vole!
Visitors to the Garden Apartment are encouraged to spend as much
time as they like exploring and enjoying the gardens. Start
House Garden Apartment is embedded in the Outstanding Natural Beauty
